I generally (well always!) leave my Pentium 233 laptop switched on plugged into the mains although a lot of the time when im not using it the screen is set to power down. Im just wondering how much in realistic money terms this costs me in electricity?

djuk,

find out how many watts the unit uses, check transformer etc.. then allow an average between 90-150 watts = 1p/per hour dependant on leccy supplier

I have three cut-down mid-range Pentium machines running 24/7 (they run a few hard drives and nothing else), my last electricity bill for the quarter was 55 quid.

I have three Suns that are only ever turned on when I need them, they vacuum electricity like there is no tomorrow

I've tested some desktops around the office, and they all run 40-60 watts during normal use (not including monitor) with peak power at bootup circa 70-80 watts. This includes some P4s with lots of memory, CD-RWs, etc. I am guessing yours would be a little under that being a 233 as ours are all P3 and above. Any newer laptop should be under 30 watts.

You can check here for maximum power consumption by the parts in your PC. Here

Not much!

Depends on the power supply, hardware etc. Considering that most PCs have a 350W PSU these days and in reality the PC isn't running flat out all the time and would never use 100% of the available PSU capacity. Probably averages out to around 70-80 Watts i.e. a bit more than a normal light bulb.

Of course you have to add the monitor on top of that, probably about the same again for a CRT.
