Athlon XP cooling
#1
Have got an Athlon 1700+ based pc, see no reason to change it as its only for web browsing as I have the PS2/Xbox for games, I would however like to quiten it down a bit, it has a coolermaster Hac V81 Heat sink and fan which I bought as the el cheapo one I bought when I built it was letting it run a little hot at 52c (and was noisy), the new one dropped the temp to around 44.
I have heard about the Zalman fan with the radial cooling fins, anyone got any experience of these or any other alternatives.
Anybody running a water cooled system ?

Er the way I see it is different, 30 quid for peace and quiet !
Could afford to buy a new pc but cant see the point, just interested in the noise v cooling issues, its left on 24/7 so it needs to be cool and it also needs not to sound like a plane taking off.

I had a Zalman Flower on my old XP2200+ and I had to run the fan control at full(approx 2200rpm) but it did cool the machine down.Wouldnt say it was quiet cos it was running at full rpm but if its turned down you will probably not notice a thing.Just make sure you get some decent TIM(Artic Silver 5 is reckoned to be the best)
I would have a look on www.Overclockers.co.uk in their heatsink and fan section as they give the CFM aand DBA ratings of all the fans. You might be able to get something quieter than the stock Zalman for a few quid more.
Dont knock his chip Steve it might be one of the uber overclocking 1700's
Edit to add as Si got in before me.
I have the Aero 7+ and its pants when you crank it up it whines its head off so dont bother IMHO.

my athalon 1.2ghz oc`d to 1.3ghz thing will sit all day @ 35 degrees with the side cover off but when the side pannels fitted, it jumps up to 40 just web browseing, saw 44 this afternoon
feken rediculas, it was only supposed to have a 50mm fan on it (when the pc was bought) but now ive got 2 coolermaster 80mm fans double stacked, a 80mm cooler master fitted to the front of the case for a inlet and another at the back for a exhaust
fitted another in the psu to replace the fan in there
Oc`d the crappy nividia graphics card as wwell which probably wont be helping anything
might just buy a faster mobo/cpu and run it stress free (bit like the 2.5 engine swaps on low boost lol)

If your motherboard can handle heatsinks this big, then this puppy is worth it's weight in gold:
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=48547
Now you on here that know me, such as steve and the other old hats, know that 99% of the time I buy top quality expensive kit to get the job done, but when something really cheap amazes me for the money charged, I buy it.
I have fitted these recently on Athlon 1200's right upto 2800's and they have been simply amazing for the money in every case.
One of the very best heatsinks I have used so far and I don't praise cheap heatsinks easily.
Cheers,
Nick

Lo Nick
Long time no speak mate.I have seen that H/S about but having had such poor performance from my Aero 7+ and the last Coolermaster I had that made my ears bleed cos it was so noisy that I am going for a Thermalright SLK900A as my mobo doesnt have the 4 mounting holes to get the 947U.
I even tried a peltier Nick just waiting for the credit card refund on that puppy(another load of pap)

Heh,need to say hello and all that after my month back home.
I ain't recommending it for the hardcore and the Aero7+ is a good heatink, but not a don for overclocking. The heatink is virtually silent tho, which is why it is so impressive with just how well it cools. For peeps wanting to helps silence their standard machines and HAVE THE ROOM TO FIT IT IN, I can recommend no other.
Cheers,
Nick

Just remember folks that in a lot of cases the cpu temps that you see displayed by your PC's are pretty innacurate a lot of the time. Some athlon motherboards are known to under read by as much as 10c and some to over read by as much as 10c. So take all these temps with a pinch of salt. As long as the heatsink doesn't feel like it is burning up and the machine passes cpu stress tests, then

The answer to that is I don't know, as I have just built the machine. So I have not run the processor with any other heatsink and fan. I was looking to build a very quiet machine as I will be mostly using it as a music machine and a DVD/video source editor.
