Received a suprise X-Box for Christmas. Really amused at how much I like this console. Feel like a kid. Something about it takes me back to the great times of the Super Nes.
Anyway, mods.
What will the various mods available do for my X-Box? I don't have a clue. Looked at some UK sites but they don't go into much detail about what they actually do.
We don't currently have broadband so is that going to seriously restrict any usefulness in modding the Box?
How quickly do the mods go out of date and drop in price? Is it similar to buying pc game cards, memory, etc etc in that prices are soon out of date?
Thanks.

At the level for 99% of people - once chipped its chipped. A few features become available in later BIOS, like Hard Disks now > 138Gb. I believe some of the very early chips needed to be upgraded to take advantage but for most now its a software upgrade only.
For me the most use of having it chipped is playing films and MP3 off my existing server. I dont have Broadband but do have shared ISDN internet access but havent tried either X-Box Live or the alternatives yet.
Some more stuff here

Yep, you can run XBMP/XBMC for playing back any media files, viewing images etc, stream these files from your PC over your network.
You can use many emulators for SNES/Megadrive/N64/Speccy/C64 etc.
You can FTP save games to your HDD downloaded from the net - small files.
Backup your games to HDD so they access & load faster.
Customise the dashboard with menus to run all of your stuff.
Run Liunx.
Plus loads more depending on what you want to do
Edit to say: One of the current Xecutor Lite chips will be suitable for 99% of users. Upgrades are just by means of flashing the bios.

If you're after an N64 emulator then Surreal64 has just been released and its great. Its a kind of interface into 3 other N64 emulators and picks the best one for the game you want to run along with recommended settings. Loads of box-art is included too, looks fasntastic, very well presented and easy to use

Yep it works Its a combination of the 3 decent N64 emulators out there. Some of the emus play some games better than others and Surreal64 sorts all of that out for you by recommending which one to use and with which graphics/sound driver. Was playing Mario Kart64 just the other day, music a little jerky in places but worked a treat

OK, Sorry if I sould a little stoopid, but spell it out for me as I'm intrigued by this. I've got an X-box. I've got Goldeneye and a whole host of different games on cartrige. The emulator is software. Do I use some kind of hardware to use the cartriges or is it done in some other way which we can't mention without getting the thread closed?

Yes Surreal64 is available on xbins, thats where I got my copy.
The roms can be downloaded from the usual places, mail me if you need one in particular that you own the original of
Simon - You can only play original games on X-Box Live (ie. Not your backups of your originals ). Also you need to switch off the chip with a harwired switch to avoid detection. There are many other ways to play online with chipped boxes though.

You're not actually banned from ever connecting to Live again.
You're X-Box live account is not banned, your EPROM is.
This is Microsoft being very clever again, this enables you to go and buy another console and connect using your existing Live account.
All this equals more money for Mr Gates.
