VAT/DUTY on U.S. computer imports?
#1
I'm thinking about ordering a PDA from the U.S. and I'm aware of the duty and VAT implications.
Has anyone ordered any expensive items like this from the U.S. and did you get stung for the duty and VAT? I know it's hit and miss for lower value items.
I have a friend over there who could probably send it to me directly, if I have it shipped to him first.
Don't know if that would help though!

I've just received a new digi camera from the US (£585, so should be liable for import etc.) but heard nothing at all. The parcel was clearly marked as a digital camera, so I don't know whether spot checks are done or whether they check them all and decide on what they are going to let through.

officially £150 is the limit for importing goods into the UK without incurring taxe and tarrifs. However I have had goods sent over being marked as gifts which incurr no taxes/tarrifs.
