Question

My pc is going nuts every now & then, everything slows down seriously. I'm keeping task manager open all the time now & it looks like windows explorer is using 90%-100% of CPU resources & this is causing it to slow everything down. Surely explorer shouldn't be using this much resources? Have run ad aware/spybot & AVG anti virus so my pc should be totally clear. How can I find what's causing it??

It sounds like a Klez virus. It tags itself to your network settings - e.g. SVCHOST and then passes 100% of CPU time to this - it does not damage computer, but you'll need and extraction tool from www.symantec.com

Hmm, it's not the Klez I've just checked for that & it's all clean, any other idea lol.

BTW I'm on WinXP Pro

There are a lot of diffrent Klez viruses, start ending all the SVCHOST files running in processes, if the computer locks you out and starts a countdown timer, its normally a variant of the W32 Klez.

Reboot ... press F8 as it enters windows . and select safe mode .

Now do a disk defrag (programs->accessories-> system tools -> disk defragmenter )and it may help performance ..

Deffo not a defrag issue as I do that at least once a week & only defragged C: 2 days ago.

Can anyone reccomend some decent AV software as AVG isn't doing its job

Cool, I'll try ending svchost & see what happens next time it starts playing up.
It's real odd it'll go nuts for about 10-15mins at 100% cpu then it'll go back down to 0 & be fine for a while.

Sort of.......go here http://www.merijn.org/downloads.html and download HiJack This, it will find anything running that shouldn't be but don't delete everything it finds and then try here www.free-av.com
