Has anyone took a laptop to a hotel and used it for internet access

Yes you can use aol. But you need to download the access numbers for France before you go. Go to keyword Global and select France then load the numbers in a new location call it France!
Unfortunately it will be a local accesss number and not a freephone number as it is in the uk. You will be using the AOL Globalnet service and will be charged extra by AOL (Not much) also the hotel may/will charge for the call.
You will probably have to dial a 0 or 9 to get an outside line from the hotel so you will need to edit your connection accordingly.
However, it does work and I have used it in South Korea, Norway, Denmark, Greece to name a few.
Most Hotels have a computer you can check your e mail on nowadays so may be an alternate option depending on your e mail load.
I have also used my mobile phone as above to connect with my laptop, a bit slow but still works fine.
