For backing up DVDs that have a license that allow you to do it, DVDShrink works quite nicely. I haven't found a reason to spend money on a product to do this... I'm using 3.0 beta 5, and it works.

Note that if you are not explicitly granted the right to back up then using this software is illegal as it circumvents copy protection - now a criminal offense due to our wonderful Government passing a law with very, very little announcement last year.

Cheers,
Nick.

Yep, I use DVDShrink, its second to none, will shrink a 9Gb dual lyer dvd to a 4.2Gb dvdr with no loss of dvd quality, I use Nero 6 to do the burning...

Works everytime!

I went through this a few days ago. Yes everything mentioned here will work and get you there, but you need to get a little **** about DVD files and their sizing in some cases.
Now for ease of use and to keep 5.1 and THX intact use this software DVD X copy Express.
You only have to press the mouse button twice to make a back up. How easy is that!!!!
I have a Pioneer 106 DVD writer and nero software although DVD X burns the copy itself without the need for a seperate burning tool.
Kazza may help you out with software.

To get you by just select all the files that were shrunk and put on your hard drive, select and then place them into the red video_TS folder on Nero. You should be able to burn away then

If you do a search on this forum you should find lots of helpful info. I personally would not touch DVD X Copy. It is a steaming pile of rubbish. Their is much better "backup" software out here.

Think about what you've just said...not really possible is it?!

Your best bet is to use a 3rd party decrypter www.dvddecrypter.com to rip the vobs from the original then try to remove as much unnecessary data from the files as you can before compressing (foreign subtitles, additional audio files, trailers, extras etc)

If it's a DVD9 you're backing up, to maintain the highest quality possible, keep the movie only and either d5.1 or DTS and english subs

This typically loses about 1.5-2gb straight away.

You're now left with a 7gb -> 4.0/4.3gb compression

Apps such as DVD2One will do it quickly (30mins) and most of the time effectively.
Pinnacle Instant Copy (and suchlike) take a little longer (3-4hours) but the results are usually better.

www.dvd-recordable.org is a good source of information before you pay for applications to do the job.

I have compared quality on DVD X, DVD decrypter, DVD2one and they all do the same job about 80% of the original quality I would say.

No real visable loss of quality if you bin unwanted subtitles/audio etc. with dvd shrink.

I normally just re-author the dvd so I have the main film with 5.1/DTS/THX ect. and burn it to dvd+R.

There is still the odd new film which is released on dvd5 (4.2gb), normally rental copies.

JUST DOWNLOADED DVD SHRINK AND GOT HOLD OF A COPY OF NERO 6.
ALL I CAN SAY IS WOW!.I AM AMAZED BY THE RESULT.THE PICTURE QUALITY IS SUPERB.IF YOU JUST BURN THE MAIN MOVIE AND ONE 5.1 SOUNDTRACK THE QUALITY IS GREAT.THE COMBINATION OF NERO 6 AND DVD SHRINK WORKS VERY WELL.
