As the title.
Thinking of going the TFT monitor route but not sure if it's worth waiting a bit. Are they gonna come down in price much more? Want one for online gaming so it needs to be fast as well. Have presently got a high quality 17" flatscreen CRT. Will the quality be comparable or worse?

Well, 15" TFT displays are in short supply at the moment so supply of 17"s has tightened as people move up to secure stocks.
Overclockers were offering a 17" TFT for £295+VAT recently. Prices should stay firm until supply catches up.

Supply and Demand. Loads of places are fully tooled up now, and supply volume is still building... They're a new toy, hence demand is high.
I am not an economist, but it makes sense that they'll continue to fall in price as the world brother and dog opens factories.

moved from a 19" Mitsubishi 900 Pro (Sony Tube) to a 17" Hyundai Q17 TFT
Immediately i noticed how bright it is. I used to have the crt low on brightness coz i was using it lots.
It took about 2 days to adjust.
Text seems sooo much easier to read. Pixel perfect
1280 x 1024 resolution.
Ive been playing Generals Zero Hour lots... its fantastic for that.
Dont notice the ghosting that people have been on about. I do notice it on my m8s Philips screen, but not this one.
Its much easier on the eyes. Easier to look at.
DVDs are fun to watch on it too.
Ok, the display ISNT as good as an excellent CRT.
However, i like it more now coz of the advantages of size and clarity without sore eyes.
cant see anything good coming out in the next 4 months to be better than this panel.

btw, the bits where it isnt as good are:
darkness isnt darkness - all TFTs are backlit
u dont notice it after the 2 day adjust
if you dont run as the native resolution, then things arnt as clear. however, run on the native resolution and things are clearer. thats all tfts tho.

Have a Dell 19" TFT on my desk and it is perfect for just about everything. In most cases it is also better than the Dell Trinitron 19" flatscreen CRT it replaced.
However, colour accuracy sucks big time. I understand this is fairly common on most TFTs though. Not a problem unless you are trying to get the colours right for printing purposes etc.
Cheers

I think I am gonna go for an Iiyama Pro Lite E431S. Nice looking with great performance & DVI for only £311 inc vat and at the end of the day it is an Iiyama
I don't like the Samsung's because of the slow 25ms response times.

Personally, I had a 17" Iiyama CRT for quite some time, I then bought a 17" Panel, cant remember model but it was one of the low response ones recommended by tomshardware after thier 20ms vs 16ms roundup. Anyway, I put it on my desk at work when it arrived and it didnt even make it home!!! The ghosting was unbearable in FPS games, I just hated it!
So the next day I ordered myself (for almost the same price) a 22" Iiyama Vision Master Pro Flat CRT Havent looked back since, but judging on the eye strain I wont be looking anywhere soon!!!
But i've got used to the sheer size of it, so i'm gonna start looking for a decent 19" LCD and sell the 22" Iiyama (Oh and they kindly left me with 2 by mistake, so i've got 2 to sell which should pay for the 19" LCD).
If any FPS freaks get an LCD, let us know!

Ah got the model of the one i had now:
NEC MultiSync® LCD1760NX 17" TFT Monitor (MO-000-NE)
its rated at 16ms, but if that's what 16ms has to offer then i need a 5ms!!!
I also found out whilst researching a few months back that the higher end models which have a better brightness ratio (the 350:1 bit) all seem to have worse response times as the brightness goes up! which is disappointing. But does mean some of the lesser branded ones which have less brightness inherently have better response times The Benq and LG models spring to mind!
What we need really is a high end model with decent brightness with response times below 16ms! Ah well, keep waiting. Then again I might be blind by then, so I'm probably going to order the lowest response time 19" lcd i can find and see if it suits, if not it goes back straight away!.
