My old PC just died on me. Completely dead. Obviously I have checked power lead which is OK and will try and get help on Monday. However is there any obvious thing I can check first such as fuse in main box? Any comments welcome please. JL

When you try to turn the power on does the PSU fan come on?

No fan sound so this dead as well (it was quite noisy so I am sure about that).

psu = Power Supply Unit?

Is fuse anything I would recognise (PC amateur here)

dead easy way is hook up the mb to another psu, just plug in the psu and plug the main cable into the mb of ur machine, if the cpu fan comes on, your away, replace the psu

Look on the side of the power supply and look at the rating.
Then head over to one of the main PC 'bits' suppliers such as dabs, ebuyer or komplett

It'll either be under power supplies, or computer cases.

Something around the 300-400W range will do fine.

Dont forget to check if its ATX or AT format (ATX being the newest)

 

if you have a local computer shop, you can pop down there with your case, ask them to plug in a psu and check it for you, that way you know your not waisting your time, also its quite easy to change once you find out if its that, it does sound like that, i had similar problems before, and as the guys said before, unless you are running a large server or powerfull pc, then average 300-350w psu will do the job, its quite standard, one thing to note, if you are set on quietness, tehn go for something like an enermax with adjustable fan, some cheaper ones can be quite noisey

 

Have taken back off and unit is a Sky Hawk Switching Supply Unit model SKS-230w. This is a circa 97/98 vintage stand alone PC so things will have moved on a bit since then! I am a bit nervous about doing much else so will take along to shop and see what they say. I am worried that they wiil say that is long out of date and a modern one won't be suitable? Thanks again. Nah, they should have one, even if its an AT there are still plenty of generic PSU's around, if its an ATX then any will do, even if its a higher rating it doesent matter. Mine went, I diagnosed it being a bit of a geek as being the PSU, no fans going no voltage, went to the local overpriced computer shop, bought PSU, brought it back fitted it and it booted straight back up, total down time less than an hour.
