Currently have one phone socket downstairs, run an extension upstairs to bedroom, micro filter, usb adsl modem.

What wireless router can I get that already has an ADSL modem so I can hook it up to the socket downstairs and then stick a wireless nic in my PC upstairs. I just want to get rid of the extension cabling and I like the idea of wireless.

Is it worth going for wireless-g kit?

Simon.

I've just put in a Netgear DG824M, which seems like a good bit of kit. Some people just don't like Netgear, but it works well for me. It's only an 11MBs device, though.

I hate Netgear products, however ....

.... I use the DG824M and it is excellent, highly recommended, easy to setup, built in ADSL modem (which most don't have), built in firewall.

Defo recomended

BTW I see you mention g standard, this will allow communications of upto 54mbs where as b is 11mbs. If you're only planning to use this for the internet then don't worry about it as you will see no benefit wotsoever whereas if you are planning to use mulitple computers and also share files accross the network then it is worth thinking about.

Si

Got the netgear dg824m installed at mum dads place 2 days ago- works brill - adsl modem/firewall/wirelss 11g + 4 port 100 switch for 138 inc vat for nxt day delivery.
Top kit to share internet connection via wireless or 4 port switch.
I recommend it - Got mine from simply computers - scotts ordered the linksys version but not sure how good that is but Net Gear is cool kit! + because it has a 4 port switch u can always chain on another 54g/ 100g/ 108g wireless bridge for faster wirless at a later date + if u wanna and u can disable the built in wirless 11g on the netgear itself if u want- if u order it then get the upgrade firmware from netgear website which allows this and few more functions.

but for future make sure your other card in the pc or laptop is at least 100g(by US robotoicts) or the new 108g wireless cards from Netgear coming out this month!

Hmm checking around and Dabs should have the Netgear dg834g router very shortly which is only £128 inc vat and is wireless g so 54g. Worth waiting a week or so I think.

Hows it going Chris? Reading is good at the moment - everyone having a good time in the new offices.

Netgear DG834G won't be widely available for sometime....... if you want one then I would recommend you pre-order now and be prepared for a possible long & frustrating wait.
