not sure but first thing that comes to mind is that they might have been formatted using an old boot disc and may need re-formatting into 32bit or NTFS.
Now, did a search and found this (at your own risk)
To force Windows to attempt to reinitialize the protected-mode IDE driver you'll have to remove the noide entry from the registry:
Start the Registry Editor
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ System \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ VxD \ IOS
Delete the NoIDE entry
Search your registry for BAD_IDE (You can Search the registry by pressing F3 while working in the registry editor.
Delete any BAD_IDE values you find
or look here

I cant see your piccy either, but I do know what you mean.
MSDOS compatibilty mode is not a good thing, it basically means that your drive (all yours drive's I think) will be running in 16bit mode and will be very slow.
This is strange for a HDD to be doing this.
Try the following;
good luck

Try the following;
- Check for conflicts with other drives by removing all other non essential drives and rebooting the computer. Sometimes drives can just be fussy about be mastered/slaved with other drives
- Ensure that you have no DOS mode drivers loaded for this drive or any other in the system.. This will be in config.sys or autoexec.bat. In today's Windows these are pretty non-essential files, so an easy check fot this is to rename name then reboot the system
- Ensure you have the correct settings in the BIOS for the drive
- Ensure you have not used an IDE cable with and ATA drive
- Newer ATA drives can be really fussy with older IDE motherboards
good luck

Cheers.

Are you running Windows 95/98. My wild thought is that you could have a weird 16-bit driver loaded before windows starts ( config.sys file ) hence the error.
Just a thought.

Is UDMA (or whatever it's called :0 ) turned on in the BIOS? You say it's a new HDD so I'm asuming it's a second/third HDD that you have installed as a slave.
I had a similar problem a while back. I had purchaed a WD 120GB second HDD for my Win98se PC. My bios only supported upto 64gb I think. There was a BIOS program I had to install to enable Win98 to recognise the full size (BIOS still shows only 64GB). Somewhere in the instructions there was a notice to turn off UMDA for this drive. When I did I had the same messages you had. I switched UMDA back on and it worked perfectly.
