How to stop mpegs opening in quicktime.
#1
I need some help to stop mpegs opening in quicktime,I want them to open in Windows media player as you can see roughly how long is left to download. It did open just about everything in media player but then I viewed a quicktime movie and now mpegs always open with quicktime.
I have gone into windows explorer and changed the settings on the tools so mpegs open in media player but it still does opens quicktime.
Anyone have any solution??

easiest way is shift + right mouse button choose open with and select choose program (not media player or quick time which should already show) then select media player from list, tick the always use this program box and click ok

I have looked in the quicktime settings and cannot see anywhere to change it.
Where do you use the shift right mouse button?
If I do that on an mpeg link I can only open the file, there is no option to choose.Should I be looking somewhere else??
Thanks

In Quicktime (version 6.0, anyway...) the file associations are accessed via Edit\Preferences\Quicktime preferences\File Type Associations
Then deselect 'Windows File Types' (hopefully!)
If you're trying to do it via Windows' file associations, the appropriate panel is accessed via Windows Explorer. In WinXP (and 2k I think, can't remember for others) it's under Tools\Folder Options\File Types (tab)\. Then scroll down to the file extension of the movie type you're interested in (e.g .mpg/.mpeg/.mpa/.mpe/.mpv2 etc) and hit the 'Change' button. Then choose the application/executable you want to play those files with.

Apart from associating the file types with Media Player within Media Player (Tools\Options\File Types\...) - no, I can't think of anything else. Do you have any other media-control programs running in the background? Anything running from Startup (or similar in the registry) that could be resetting your associations?
Despite these association changes you're making, does the media file (???.mpg) itself keep a Quicktime icon and still open with Quicktime?

Am I just stupid cause when I shift right click on the mpeg link I get the following list
Open
Save target as
Print target
Cut
Copy
Copy shortcut
Paste
Add to favorites
Properties
If I click to open it opens it in quicktime, there is no mention of choosing how to play.
