Open up a COMMAND PROMPT window.
Type in PING WWW.SCOOBYNET.CO.UK.
You should now get the ping results to this website. You can of course do this to any address

For gaming I reckon you need a ping below 70ms. I usually get around 25-35ms. Blueyonder cable is the ping king

Downstream 119 Kbps (14.9 KB/sec) 128 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 126 Kbps (15.8 KB/sec) 136 Kbps (inc. overheads)

why is it crap?

That's not very good. I would expect you to be seeing somewhere in the region of 60kb/s.
