What would cause a laptop to over heat?
Just used for browsing the net only a couple of windows open at a time.
It feels really hot underneath some days doesnt take long others it can run 6 or 7 hours with no problems.
When it gets hot it just switches off.
Any ideas?

My laptop (an aged HP Omnibook 900) seems to build heat through the day. Running big databases in MS Access seems to get the fan going! I guess just big processing tasks get it hot under the collar!

you should check you pc or get your pc checked every year as a perventative maintenance.
Basically a clean out, new thermal grease on the processor and reseat connections (remembering anti static precautions)
Just like the car, the PC needs a service now and again
As for the laptop overheating, could be down to a fan failure, but don't be fooled by the fan not spinning up on power as some of them do not use the fan until needed to conserve power.
Some do run hot but as long as the fan comes on and off it should be ok.

You can here the fan running most of the time sometimes goes into megaspeed.
Noticed it more since using it with a wireless card in the slot in the side, could this make a difference?
And it is more likely to cut out if charging when using it.Although it has cut out once when not charging.

yes, it could make a difference. a lot of PC Cards (PCMCIA cards) run hot, and a few laptops also use PC card slots as a bit of extra cooling when empty...
You can get a PC card fan - that might help, assuming you've got two slots and one of 'em is free?

Is it a Toshiba Satellite 1800 series?
Got one myself and it has a problem cooling the desktop processor.
There is an "alleged" fix from Tosh which effectively reduces the clock speed, but mine still suffers.
IIRC there was talk of a class action over it in the US. Don't know what came of it in the end...lost interest and use another one now.
Tosh UK didn't want to know
