Check the article and comment thread at Eurogamer for a pretty good discussion of how much trouble this could cause Valve. A damn shame this has happened.

Just a heads up.
If you know where to find the source code, please don't post a link to it on SN. It's in the same vein as piracy and the posts will be edited/removed.

That really sucks, 5 years work down the pan. Game engine revenues often exceed that of the game itself Although I suspect it'll be used for blackmail purposes.

I can't see any other games being released using this engine without permission - imagine the bad press for any company big enough to produce levels, graphics and sounds of its own but using the stolen engine. The resulting legal battle would be all over the geek press.
All they really have to fear, IMHO, is that any novel technology used in the engine might 'inspire' competing developers to include similar technology in their own games. I doubt there's much to worry about significant chunks of actual code being used. Of course, little functions could be used undetected.

it isn't just that.
think about the ai code as well. I was amazed at how those big tall spider robots(?) were walking and interacting with the surroundings in the video. It must have taken a lot of ai to get that to work! Other developers would of have to guessed on how they did it, but now they can simply just look through the code to see how.
