installed a new pc yesterday. when i plug the modem cable into the phone socket (even with the pc off), the other two phones in the house go mental, ringing and clicking.
modem works fine with phones unplugged and vice versa. happens when cable plugged into both line and phone sockets in back of modem.
all suggestions welcome...

Try swapping the wires on one of the sockets over, 2 and 5 will be the offending ones I think.
Obviously all the wires should be consistant (i.e. blue and white should be used on connection 2) through-out the telephone circuit.
Hope this helps, Phill

cheers, i'll take the backs off. odd thing is that the old pc (different modem) worked fine. if i plug a phone into this socket, its fine too. seems to be just a combination of this new modem and this socket.
edited to say i've tried more than one modem cable too...

There must be corrosion on the socket or modem lead then. You have the line voltage, leaking across to the bell circuit (3) on the inside of the socket. Sorry I haven't explained this that well, as I'm still pissed from last night

BT engineer here. try this:
1. plug a phone in the socket. if it works ok,no spurious ringing, dial tone ok, and rings in/out ok, the wiring and socket are ok.
2. can you plug the computer/modem into another socket in the house to test? if so, do so.
3. call me on 07703 106271,if you want and will talk you through more instructions.
Regards, Cliff

havent had chance yet cliff. a friend of a friend is a telecomms engineer and has told me to disconnect wires 3 and 4 as its a common problem with modems (leaving 2 and 5), apparently 3 and 4 are the bell circuit ? (this socket is dedicated to the modem so doesnt need to be able to ring)
its at my sisters house so prolly the weekend before i can pop across and try some things...
cheers.

Old telecom engineer here,
If you are plugging into the last extension socket you will not need terminal 3 connected, as your modem does not need to ring. Just pull the wire off. Sounds like you have an American Modem Line Cord which can send 50v down the ringing wire?
