What OS you on?
What are you trying to do - if it's just to backup the HDD, then just copy it. The OS will handle it without a 3rd party package.
if you're compressing it, then that's a different kettle of fish.
If you're creating a disc image, TOAST will do that anyway.
The ethos behind MACs was that if you're backing up the harddrive, you can just copy it!!
Just the same as extensions etc can be copied from different macs etc.....
The beauty of a proper OS
Hope this helps (deffo works on OS9.2 - haven't tried it with OSX, but should be the same)

Not too sure what Mac OS yet as not seen the machine, All I know is that the hard disc is a little stuffed and the customer has requested a replacment hard drive. - So could do with a direct copy of whatevers on the HD.
Just want to appear as if I know a little about mac's ( though I know next to nothing about them !!)
thanks for the help

you should be able just to either copy it (as per master/slave on the PC) or burn it onto a load of CDs.....
Best to find out what OS it is...

Just quickly checked my mac - running OSX. Copied the system folder straight off (just dragged it to a seperate folder)
Deffo works on OS9.2 & OSX
Bear in mind that with the MAC, you can do a fresh install of the OS, and it will put your "old" OS in an "OLD system folder" - you can then drag the bits you want (extensions & programs etc) from the OLD to the fresh install!!!
This might sort out the chaps HD - just reinstall (if he's got the system CD!)
try do that on the PC with your DLLs
Hopefully the HD isn't knacked
Hope this helps

Unfortunately you can't just copy the /System folder in Mac OS X. It's not as easy as the classic Mac OS days!
Here's a good page on the topic http://www.bombich.com/mactips/image.html

Ahh OK. So you physically drag the System folder, but it won't necessarily work (due to the disk permissions etc)
Am I correct in that assumption?
So, following down this path, you can't drag the system to say, Toast, and burn off a basic system to run your mac off - a la the good old days of OS9?

That's correct. There's more to a Mac OS X system than just "/System" That's why you now need to use something like CCC to create bootable CD's, rather than the old skool way of just burning a blessed System Folder onto a disc.
You can of course install Mac OS X onto an external FireWire disc and boot from that in an emergency (the iPod is great for this, a system rescue tool and a music player in one) Don't do it regularly though as the iPod hard disc isn't designed to withstand the thrashing that an OS will give it!
