Interesting experience with NEW Chemical Brothers CD

Picked up the mail this morning and there was the little parcel from cdwow.com containing the new Chemical Brothers CD - Singles 93-03.
Popped it in the CD drive so I could put it on the MP3 player before going to the gym.
Erm. But thats not going to happen.
Upon the cd loading I was told there was new software to load before the cd would play. Fair enough so I loaded it.
The cd started to play with new skin. Wouldn't initially allow me to play the cd on Media player. So I removed the software and yeah I could play it on Media player but could I copy to file so I could load it on the MP3?
Not a chance.
Infact the drive not only wouldn't respond but would emit a rather unfortunate scraping or wineing noise.

It's does actually have 'copy controlled' stamped on the CD.
Still concerned about the noises that came from the drive. Better check it with another cd....

Protection info on Audio CD's
Key2Audio: V1, V2 and V3
Cactus Data Shield : 100 and 200
Doc.lok.: V1/2 and V3
Use clone cd... Get a CD player that can handle the protection,"http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/99/1" such as LiteOn LTR-52246S and copy the cd then rip to MP3 using Cdex! Use
(exact audio copy)"freeware" to rip the CD to MP3 or CDex also free...
This will work!

If you've got a plextor drive, install plextools then download an update. Click the "treat as single session disk" and it'll be a perfectly normal audio CD in the drive.

on snet shout "hypocrite" at me, I have no qualms about this: you have bought the music, you should be able to hear it!
Again, I've said it before, if the EU implements their Super-DCMA, this will be illegal with unbelievably draconian punishments possible if you do do it, because you will be seen as circumventing a copy-protection mechanism. Shout NOW at your MP, and take a stance unless you really want to be treated as a criminal for using something you have a license to use!

there will never be a copyprotection system which will be able to stop u rippin to mp3, if all else fails in any case u can always play thru a normal cd player and use line out into line in on ya pc n record voila!

they're more concerned about digital copies being "perfect" bit-by-bit... At least with tape etc, each generation would lose quality.
But you've hit the nail on the head: they can never stop this, it's like trying to stop the tide. If you sell information in an electronic format that can be read by something, someone will surely work out a way for other things to use it.
IMHO, the whole DRM is completely **** backwards and the recording/entertainment industries need to realise that their way of doing business must fundamentally change.
