I admit defeat in trying to get this toshy laptop to talk to the Desktop.

How do I totally un-install all network connections and their settings?
Is it just a case of deleting from the system hardware profile, re-booting and let it do the work.

I got as far as being able to ping the laptop from the desktop but no further, god knows what is wrong!

I have done this before and it renamed the LAN connection to LAN1 so I'm assuming it still has some file stored somewhere with the old settings still on it, can they be deleted, if so how? (assuming this might conflict with newer settings)

Fuzz

I've not been following your quest, so have no idea what you have tried so far.

You shouldn't need to go through the hassle of removing everything network related - besides which this apparently involves extensive editing of the registry, which I wouldn't recomend.

I've been on this quest several times recently, and despite some close calls, I managed to defeat the enemy every time and get them talking

What operating system have you got on each of the machines? If XP, is it home or pro version?

Are you connecting them directly (via a crossover cable) or via a hub/router?

Have you got file and printer sharing enabled on each?

Have you shared the drive/folders you want to access?

What IP addresses/subnets are you using?

Were they set manually or automaticaly?

Workgroup or domain?

Is the workgroup/domain name the same on both machines?

Cheers Figment, I've had Mr wallis on MSN support trying to sort it out a few days ago... to no avail had various others give me some tips and advise but nothing has yet worked !
Must be me
Right.. 20 questions

XP Pro on both machines.
Connected directly via crossover cable.
File and print sharing installed and ticked in both.
Yes shared folders on both machines, only " my videos" as a test to start with.
IP Addresses Manually set
Laptop 192.168.0.2
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.0.1
DNS blank

Desktop 192.168.0.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway Blank
DNS set to Clarnet supplied No's

Both on AJC workgroup.

I can ping laptop from desktop.
I CANNOT ping desktop From Laptop.
Both machines can ping themselves fine.

Clicking on "view my workgroup pc's" in "my network places" on the Laptop gets me....
2 icons, the desktop icon, which when clicked, errors "desktop is not accessible"
and the laptop icon which when clicked goes to "shared docs, tasks and printers folders".

Clicking on "view my workgroup pc's" in "my network places" on the Desktop gets me....
error message "Ajc is unavailable, might not have permission yada, yada", no icons present in my network places folder!

Note!! the error message says Ajc and not AJC ! I assume it's really AJC as I didn't think you could enter a workgroup name in lower case ?

Just looking at the lights on the back of both, Desktop has permanent orange light.
Laptop has permanent green light.
At the time.. not connected to net and both pc's idle.

tried letting Network set up wizard sort it out... nope
Tried a link Ian W supplied about ICS, folowed as pr instruct... nope.

Laptop device manager shows ethernet card to be installed running ok and no conflicts.

I do have 2 question marks over other devices, no idea what they are yet.
(base system device and Unknown device)

Destop device manager shows both ethernet cards to be installed running ok and no conflicts. (both on board MOBO)
No other glitches in desktop device manager.
(yes I have tried cable in both ports. )

Andy.... Out of options

Sorry, forgot about this yesterday. All sounds very familiar. Will read through it in detail this evening, but for now, can you try:

Open up a browser window on one of them,
type \\IP ADDY OF OTHER ONE\c$ and hit return
Tell me what happens

from the desktop....

The greyed out "sattelite\Guest" is my laptop name

Looks promising but then I could ping it from the desktop anyway.

If this is going in a user account password direction, I can tell you that the guest account is off for both machines.
the admin has 2 paswords in its list on the desktop, both to do with messenger .net (passport)

The Laptop has no passwords set.

Cheers for this fig, much appreciated.

Andy. Bit long winded, but this is what I ended up doing, having been in exactly the same position. Some may advise that some of these steps are unnecessary - all I can say is it works for me!

Go to My Computer. Click Tools > Folder Options > View (tab) > Advance settings. Scroll down to the last option (Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)) and make sure it is NOT ticked. Click Apply/OK and then close My Computer.

Next click Start > Run. Type secpol.msc OK. Scroll down the right pane and find "Network Access - Sharing and Security Model For Local Accounts" Change this to "Classic - local users authenticate as themselves" Click OK, then close.

Create an account on the desktop with a unique name ("User1"?), and add a password. Create another account on the laptop ("User2") and again add a password.

Reboot both machines. If you now try opening the icon from Network Places, you should be asked to enter username and password. If you are on the laptop connecting to the desktop, use the username User1, and the password you entered when you created the use account on the desktop. If connecting from desktop to laptop, use User2, and the applicable password.

Fingers crossed, should let you in.

Let me know?

OK second stop then
done the untick simple file sharing,
already set to classic,
set new user accounts,
desktop sharing and laptop sharing as user names.
set password for each.

restart both and log into original user name on each,
clicked on my network places.
The laptop shows shared docs on Satellite and some other folders I shared earlier (went for jughular and shared C:
all accessible, no sign of any "icons from desktop"!!

The desktop shows an empty my network places...

Cheers

Well no harm in trying but yea you would think they would both work if one computer could see another? Try changing the network card in the PC as it's probably easier to stick in a PCI network card.

Or can you take your laptop somewhere and try connecting it to another computer and see what happens.

Both computers should be able to ping the other one, not many software settings can effect pinging so must be dodgy hardware???

Guys,

Just having a browse through this, just one thing...you mention one has an orange light on the n/w card and the other has a green light, this usually indicates the speeds that the n/w cards are running at, has anyone gone into the card settings and checked that the cards are running the same speed..ie 10mb/half or 10 mb/full duplex.

Regards

Sean

Cheers for the advise Sean,
The Nvidia one on the Desktop is set to full autonegotiation

Advanced box in laptop has less functions but set to Auto mode.

Boxt, all firewalls are off, with the exception of the dial-up connection.

Andy

taken a backward step I think, pings neither way now and lappy says host un reachable instead of timing out, like it did before!

Fig,
Thanks for staying up so late last night, much appreciated, hope you got to work on time
will buy another cable today, maplins should have one...

Is there a better type of cable or quicker connection method than that of the crossover cable...
I'd be prepared to buy "whatever it takes"

Cheers all

Andy

NP Andy,

Think it's back to basics time - get the PCs talking first, then worry about the ICS later.

right !

removed network bridge on lappy.

system>pc name> network ID.
home use,
workgroup, workgroup.
finish.
Restart.

checked properties of LAN on both
still 192, yada yada (basically as they should be as stated on page 1

OK straight to cmd and ping on both.

First the lappy.

And now on the Desktop.

**** knows !

Must be a card error on desktop.. as lappy worked fine on different pc ( not me that set it up for that connection)
