Question

I'm the proud owner of a new PC and I thought I'd actually treat this properly!

Looking for the best antivirus and fireall for a home user (not professional, so nothing over about £40 each thanks!), fairly easy to use but providing good protection.

The obvious choice to me were either Norton 2003 Internet Security or McAfee Firewall and Antivirus, but they both have fairly stinking reviews on Amazon.

Advice please?

McAfee/NAI Anti-Virus
Zone Alarm

That should cover it all!

Do you by any chance have an old PC that you've replaced? If so, why not let that live out its retirement in good use - have it act as a hardware firewall/router for you

www.ipcop.org gets my vote

I've had no problems with Norton Internet Security. Bought it for £30 on-line and had problems with viruses or attacks in nearly 12 months, it works perfectly.

Also know a few people with NIS and they have nothing but praise for the product.

How much is Sophos for a single user licence? Used to be about £100.00 including free support <cough!>

No other found or could remove the 2 viruses I had - don't care what it costs - for 24/7 free support is worth it, besides I can claim it against my tax

Redkop, there are no viruses that Sophos finds that the McAfee engine does not, I'll stake my pants on it, all tests welcome at our Aylesbury labs. And, bear in mind that if the product was so good you wouldn't need so much support. I'll shut up now and crawl back into my Antivirus hole.

Haven't used the Support as yet Jack and hope I don't have to - but peace of mind knowing it's available will do me. I have lots of customer's business accounts on my PC and although I religiously back them up...it's a right PITA restoring them if I was to get a virus or anything that could **** my PC up.

That's cool, I have friends that work there and the product's good. It was the "No other found" statement that got me going, I'm quite proud of our labs here in Aylesbury.

When I did online scans to see if I had a virus [I did 4] AVG and McAfee were the only 2 that said I did...Norton and one other [can't remember the name, said I didn't] - I was using AVG at the time as my AV, but it was unable to quarantine or remove the virus. Therefore, I just asked around and the name Sophos cropped up the most.
