I've got a P4 3.06, 512Mb RAM and NVidia GeForce 4 MX 440SE 128MB graphics card, so a fairly high-spec machine.
However on some games my machine is really slowing down:
In Splinter Cell on scenes with a high level of lighting effects e.g. at the top of the elevator before entering Nicoladze's office, it's really bad.
In TOCA Race Driver bits of certain tracks, especially A1-Ring (last 2 bends) and Bathurst (twisty section at top of hill).

Besides turning the effects levels down (should I really need to do this with my spec?), what else can I try to sort this out?

Ta for any advice.

edited to downgrade grphics card :-(

Ditch the gfx card as thats the bottle neck on your system. You need something much quicker to make use of the rest of your systems pretty good spec.

just to add, when playing modern games the graphics card will always hold the key - once the CPU etc has passed a certain level (around 1.5Ghz and 512MB ram).. your pc would be better suited for games if it was 1.5Ghz and had a cheap 64Mb GF4ti4200...

You can adjust the frequencies of your graphics card but you need to add a "DWORD" line to your registry. For nvidia cards this will make the advanced configuration options visible. I do not have the exact details but I am sure that you could find something on the web. However you must be very careful when you do this as you can fry your card.

Forget what I said above. Didn't realise it was such a bad card.

Yep that graphics card is a complete and utter dog. Barely more than Geforce 2 MX with a slightly modified core, more ram and agp8x interface. The design was dated before they were even released

Also, I wouldn't try overclocking it at all. Not all graphics over well/at all by any means and you would be wasting your time expecting even succesful overclocking of THAT card to produce any noticeable difference.

and

Show you how much of a dog that card is

Sorry to seem so blunt, but as it has been mentioned, you are killing the true performance of that machine using that card.

Cheers,

Nick

Cheers for that guys. I guess I was suckered by the 128MB spec of it.
What do you suggest as a replacement for decent gaming without totally breaking the bank?
Radeon 9700 for £154 (Pro is a bit of a bank-breaker)
GeForce FX5600 for £139
Are kind of okay on price.

Review of 9800 would be welcome - can I ask how much and where from?
BTW - what's ViVo?

Cheers Nick. Should I be worried about 128MB versus 256MB, or am I just hung up on memory and in need of focusing on the card itself more?
£169 for the 9700 Pro does seem a good price...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...category=27387 Brand New £177 Inc Delivery

Seems good, but if you give that a miss, there has been a seller on there called kilbridegolf who I have bought a few things off and everything has been perfect. I am only mentioning his name because he was also selling some brand new 9700pro's on there for about £175. I got 2 mates to buy them from him and they too were perfect.

Cheers,

Nick
