If you get on the right mailing list, you can get the latest version of Serif for £10 or something silly.
Let me have a search for you Rich.

Hi all,
I do a bit of in house flyer/leaflet production for my company.
At the moment I've been messing around using Word for this sort of thing.
Okay - I know that's not what it's really designed for, but it handles some of the more basic stuff, plus it's the best thing I've currently got.
So - I want to progress a bit, and feel I need a dedicated publisher.
I don't want a full-on pro package that'll require state-of-the-art hardware, cost thousands and a degree in publishing to operate.
But I do need something better than Word.
Also:
- Needs to run on Windows 98.
- Happy to pay up to about £500-£600, but less would be better.
- Needs to be reasonably intuitive (I'm not completely thick, but I don't want to have to go on a training course to be able to use it.)
- Want to be able to open, edit and save using the all the common desktop publishing formats.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Richard

Well I have used Serif Page Plus in the past. The early versions were very easy to use, I find the latest version less easy to use. However it always scores well in those magazine tests and is very cheap. Possibly £60 ish?
I have also used MS Publisher, bit more expensive but does the job.

Thanks Chrisgr31
I'll check both of these out.
Someone else also recommended MS Publisher, so I'll definately look at that.
Oh - one other question:
Is there a standard file format that printers use?
I ask because, if I design something that I want printed by a professional (because my own printing quality/quantity capabilities are limited) what file format will they want me to use or present?
Thanks
Rich

When I use to do that sort of stuff, the printers wanted files in EPS format, encapsulated postscript.
Not sure about nowadays. But I believe they accept most formats now.

I would very strongly advise Adobe InDesign. Its a proper DTP package not something based on old Aldus Pagemaker code.
I use it to publish my club magazine and its excellent. Very powerful and lots of great features and integrates very nicely into the other Adobe products I use.
