Old Apple Macs
The plug he has is RS232 (serial) in a DIN plug. The 25 pin is indeed SCSI. His best bet would be to get secondhand one from eBay or look at a newer Mac, maybe something like a used iMac which should be around £250 these days.

EDITED to add that some more modern printers carry Mac serial ports for connection. My Epson Stylus Photo 750 that I got around 3 years ago had USB, Parallel and Mac Serial. You may find it easier to source one of these rather than a Style Writer. Don't worry too much about drivers as the Epson should support emulation of older printer models, such as the Style Writer. Check the appropriate website about this.

A friend has an old LC11 with a style writer 11 printer. The printer has died on him (or rather he killed it attempting to refill the tank) and he is stumped as to what printer it will accept.
He is saying that the printer presently attaches via a round "DIN" type plug.
The only 25pin port on the PC is a SCSI i think (turned the machine off when he tried a standard parallel cable in it), not sure if he has a serial port and definitely no USB port.
The machine has no CD-ROM drive either so drivers would need to fit onto Mac floppy discs.
Any ideas apart from the really obvious choice if binning the whole lot? Would any other printer fit with an adaptor or should he just try and get a secondhand Style Writer?
Thanks in advance.
Roy.

Dear God...that machine was discontinued in March 1993.
Not quite sure if your friend will get any MORE us out of it now, as it probably just does not make sense.Memory is impossible to source, its a 16Mhz processor(yes read that again)and its old.But saying that macs run and run so this is the info you need.
LCII
It has 1 ADB port, 2 serial ports (modem and printer) 8 pin me thinks but i could be wrong.1 SCSI port 25.
His only choice is an old stylewriter, so he will have to source it from classifieds or try

I cant remember exactly which model it is (I think it is a Style Writer II), up in my loft. It should be boxed and include manuals/leads & disks etc, although the cartridge is probably no good - I wont get chance to check until the weekend but if its all there and your mate is interested in a second hand one it can probably be up for sale. Let me know if your mate is interested.

You should be able to buy a new canon printer which is Mac friendly, if you find one the IS NOT usb then it chould work.
Problem is the OS, the new printers may require 9 or later. The LCII probably shipped with System 6/7, you could probably run 8.1 on it but anything newer won't work plus you probably won't have enough memory and it will be slow.
If he wanted to retain everything he had and do it cheaply it may be an idea to keep an eye out for an old beige desktop G3, new printers will work, OS9.1/9.2 will be fine (OSX will be too slow).
I have an external CD drive that would work with that LC too.
Failing that, I have a pile of 6300/7100/7200/7300/7500/7600/9500s with keyboards, mice and 14" monitors going for beer money
I probably have those floppy disks at home if you still need them

The sylewriters us a din8 connection I thought know as AppleTalk ( incorreclty though)
I can tell you now that there are no printers that support this any more.
You best bet to be totally honest is to replace tha machine with something more current. A good choice for a low power user is an imac which you can get for £200-£250 and will support current versions of the Mac OS and most current peripherals. YOu'd be best runnign OS9 thiugh as you might need to max out the RAM to get OSX to run quickly.
The other option is to try loot or look in the back of MacUser to see if anyone is selling a din8 compatible printer as some of the old Epsons also worked.

I met a client the other day who was running a IIci for his accounts with a Stylewriter.
Anyhow, his Stylewriter blew up, and he really didn't want to move away from the IIci (as it worked fine).
So I sourced him a Apple Personal Laserwriter from eBay for a tenner.
Searh Ebay. He could use a Laserwriter I/IInt/IIf/IIg, Pro630, Personal Laserwriter NT or NTR.
