I have a netgear NAT Router and when it is connected i can surf and download from other sites at 125KB/sec. when i try to download a torrent file i maybe get between 1 - 25KB/sec. when i take the router out of the equation i can download at over 100KB/sec from bit torrent. can anyone tell me why this is please.

cheers

How's that going to make his connection faster?

If the ports werent opened how'd he get any connection with the router?

First off i don't know a huge amount about these things as proved with my caching post but this is how i see it

Bit torrent with no firewall or router gets to use any ports it set up for by mr i designed bit torrent.

Bit torrent with a firewall but no router asks if it can use ports and user seeing it says the bit torrent client they se say's yup go for it.

Bit torrent with a router can only access the basic ports that don't need to be specified 1712,1196,1197,1715 etc but is blocked from using others as router is set to disallow comunication unless told otherwise.

Bit torrent with a router and firewall (my setup) once you allow ports on router, firewall asks for permission to use those ports (mine did).

I can confirm what Cookie has suggested. I was using BT with a router and only got up to 25k downloads. I took the router out and installed Zonealarm. I then got 125k per second on most downloads. The reason (as cookie says) is that you have to open a certain range of ports on the router / Zonealarm. I didn't know how to do it on my router so I just did it in Zonealarm instead.

Looking back on it i could've left my router in, disabled the firewall on the router and ran zonealarm.
