lost xp password !

from the login screen ctrl+Alt+Delete should bring up the normal log in screen.
Then log in as 'Adminstrator', not sure whether it should be in caps or not, using 'Adminstrator' for the password.
That should get you in, hopefully!!
When you install xp it usually asks you for the admin password, can you remember if it did? If not then hopefully adminstrator account should work.
I did read about being able to reboot an xp pc with a windows 2000 boot disc, not exactly sure about this, maybe someone else knows better. But I would give the admin account a go.

You are asked for admin password on install of XP.
Also, if you reset his password, you will lose a load of data which was personal to his account.
But then, if that's the only option, you'll have to do it.

crack the sam file.
If running NTFS do the following:
Get a copy of NTFSDOS from here http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/fr.../NTFSDOS.shtml
boot to dos via a dos boot disk, insert ntfsdos and run it. It will mount your ntfs partition as x (for example)
enter the following copy x:\winnt\repair\sam a:\sam
(if running fat32, miss out the ntfsdos bit and use c: as your drive)
Now get your self a program like lophtcrack (LC4) or cain and abel, install it on a 'working' machine and crack the sam file.
You have the advantage of knowing whether you used 'special' characters or not and approximate length, so you can make a custom brute force to suit your needs and speed up the crack
