Tonnes of ICMP Requests

For the last week my Zonealarm has registered 37,000 Blocked Intrusions. 99% of them are from other NTL users and they're all INCOMING ICMP requests.
Is this due to the viruses recently?
I haven't got the virus (done plenty of scans) but surfing is bloody slow at the moment. Although downloads are still bloody quick.
Any ideas?

My ISP, Demon, have actively decided to block ICMP 8 - Echo requests at it's borders (see http://www.demon.net/helpdesk/announ...3-08-19a.shtml) but even so, i am getting pinged by loads of "internal" users.
People should have to take a test (and pass) to even be allowed on the Internet, let alone be connected to broadband
Oh, and firewalls should be compulsary on punishment of death!
