Have seen some of the DVD threads and was surprised how cheap it is nowadays, what do I need writer wise to get started, I only have a PS2 for playing DVD's ans I get the feeling that I need one of the el-cheapo DVD players first that play the DVDr's. Basically just want to back up my mp3 collection and cant be arsed doing it to cd roms. so heres some questions

1/ Do they burn CD's ok as well
2/ Which standard
3/ is it easy to back up a DVD
4/ What software
5/ Whats a good writer to get (price)
6/ Whats the failure rate like

My pc should be up to it, 1700 Athlon with 512 mb DDR and XP Pro

As for copying dvd's,sorry backing them up.....

1.i bought a 2 speed toshiba writer for £130,its a -r type,they may now be cheaper.
2.I use nero and dvdshrink(free)....dead easy to use.
3.Use Bulkpaq purple's at 60p each, this is a good place to buy dvd-r and dvdrw media.
4.I write at one speed,no failure's yet.newer writes are faster, but the media may be dearer.
5.Not all disks work on all players.buy one first and try it out
6.yes they do cd's
7.Your pc is way more powerful than mine
8.Do a search.....been covered b4.
9.I have a sony dvd player, never found anything yet it wont play.

Thumbs up

The best deal about IMO is at www.playstationmods.com

A Teak badged 105 is going for £89.99 plus VAT
This works out about £112 delivered.
If you're too lazy or don't want to risk damaging your new drive, they will flash the firmware to v1.33 for an extra fiver.
This allows you to burn 2x media instead of 1x (default), unlocks the drive to region free, increases the read speed of the drive and supposedly reduces vibration.

You could pick up a Pioneer 106 for about £130 delivered, allowing you to burn +r and -r media. The drive is reasonable new though so no firmware upgrades are available yet to 2x media only burns at 1x

If you're looking to back up yout PS2 games to avoid damaging the originals, perhaps the 106 is a better option as +r media is s'posed to be more compatible with games consoles.
