Password When Starting Windows - How Do I Cancel ?
#1
When I start Windows 98 up I am asked for a username and password. It is of no use as I am the only person using this PC, and I can just click on "cancel" and it loads windows, so it is useless anyway.
How can I cancel this request for a password ?
Many thanks
Matt

If you have a network installed, each time you log on you will be asked for a password. To disable this:
Right-click on the Network Neighborhood icon and select Properties
On the Configuration tab, select Windows Logon in the Primary Network Logon box
When Windows prompts you to restart your computer, click No
Click the Start button, point to Settings, then select Control Panel
Double-click the Passwords icon
On the Change Passwords tab, click the Change Windows Password button, click OK, then set a blank password
If you have Client for Microsoft Networks selected in the Primary Network Logon box, each time you log on you will be asked for a password. The improvement in Windows 98 is such that if you press Cancel at the Logon box, you won't be able to access the Network.

Tried all of the above, still not working
I can still bypass the password by clicking on "ok", its just annoying as I can't switch my computer on to let it boot up without having to be there...

Hey Terzo 333,
We use this configuration all the time. The only required setting is in Network Properties set primary logon to Windows Logon, after setting this, reboot and try entering a NEW user name and NO password. You should find that after a reboot this will not prompt no more.
If this doesn't work there is a utilty called TweakUI, this came on the Windows 98 release 1 CD, but not on the second edition cd . It has a function that allows you to set it to automatically logon when it reboots, under the network tab. It is used for automated booting of Win98 that needs to log onto a network unattended.
I'll have a quick scout and see if I can find a link for ya.
