Any help gratefully rec'd

That's how I interpret it. I've been looking for someplace (on Redhat.com) that actually states that at a fact. No luck so far.

Thanks for the reply! :-)

Versioning is a standard. Also remember it's not a RedHat kernel, Redhat
is the distribution, it's a Linux kernel.

First decimal is the version number.
Second decimal, if it's even, is a stable kernel. Odd numbers are development ke
rnels.
Third decimal is the release number of that (stable|development) kernel, again the even (stable) odd (dev) applies.

The 18-14 part could imply that RedHat used parts of kernels 2.4.14 - 2.4.18 to build their own kernel for distribution. Not sure on that part _exactly_

I believe it's just redhats own internal revision of their kernel based on that release. They add their own patches they consider important/useful to the kernels they release.
