Question

i've just ordered 500k broadband and was wondering if anyone has recommendations on a wireless access point.

I want to connect main desktop at the ADSL point and another low spec desktop in my son's room in the "roof".

any advice very welcome

I got the netgear WG602 for £117 from Dabs.com with a 54g pcmcia card included. Sounds like you need a router as well though for what you want.

I got one of these from SEG.

http://www.seg.co.uk/products/a_vigor2600we.html

Great bit of kit - all built in (firewall, etc) and just works. Good range on the wireless (I have it in an upstairs room and get good signal strength all over the house - got a wireless laptop and PDA).

depending what wireless setup you want, you can get a peer2peer wireless setup with 2 wireless NIC. ideally would be a AP (access point) and wireless client NIC.

you can get a all-in-one hardware solution which consist of adsl modem, router and wireless.

Thumbs down

Don't know if it is sold in your market, but I made the mistake of buying some "Sitecom" wireless kit last year and it was ****. Avoid.

Don't want to thread hijack, but whats this peer2peer wireless setup ?

I already have an ADSL Router (not wireless) and want to link to my X-Box downstairs without cables. Don't really want to fork out on a new wireless ADSL router as well as a bridge. Is there a way of transmitting a wireless signal direct from my PC ?

peer to peer is like linking one PC to another PC (one-to-one connection). whereas if you are using a AP (access point), you can link one AP to more tha one wireless client.

so for peer to peer, you only need 2 wireless NIC.

Thanks suba

So does this mean that I can connect my X-Box to my PC with a wireless NIC in the PC and an wireless ethernet bridge on my X-Box ? Or prehaps a bridge on the X-Box and one on the router ?

Dunk,

I have a D-Link AirPlus set up for my XBox.
Wireless router/modem for my network and ADSL connection and the XBox is hardwired into the ethernet port.
I think there's a widget out now that allows a wireless connection with the XBox rather than use a cable but haven't looked around tbh

Be careful as not all wireless apps are XBox compatible.
