Is it me or do people think that those broadband speed tests are absolute rubbish?

I have got 2MB ADSL (20:1) and when I run the speed tests it says I have got less than 1MB, I am however DL'ing at 200KB/sec atm and get speeds up to 230KB/sec

and no I did#nt run the test at the same time as I was DL'ing

Trouble with a test for that is people using it, either you've got to download something 'large' to get an accurate meseasument, which means bandwidth at their end will eventually be a problem leading to low results. Or you have to download something small, which means a momentary fluctuation causes the test to be innaccurate. Either way they're probably crap. I'd just go with looking at your normal downloads and if you're not happy with the rate, complain. 230K/sec is obviously fine for 2Mbit

I've used those speed tests at work on our 10mbit connection, usually comes out quite low( < 4mbit ). I can download at 1.2MBytes/s though.

Oh and i use nildram at home, i can only get 512k though because BT suck( I live in a brand new flat with a new phone line and BT say my line is crap ).

The tests are also influenced by the peering arrangements on the links from you to the test site.

I have boxes in Telehouse London which can crack 1 Megabyte per second from Microsoft but get poor results on some of the 'speed tests'

I signed up with Zen for a wires-only package. Their service has been spot-on.

Order/activation process was a piece of cake, you can track the progress of your line activation online and they only have a one-month cancellation notice period.

Couple of other people at work use them and they'v been really pleased as well.

I'm on Tiscali, no outages in a year+ of use, it lags the internet connection a bit while you're on the phone though, anyone else get this on ADSL?

I'm with Eclipse on the same exchange (I think) as workshy_fopp.
I haven't noticed any delay while voice calls going on, but then, hardly ever on the phone....

Had Eclipse for a year+ so far, and no outages. Not the cheapest now, but always seems to get No.1/2/3 in adslguide.org

Exclamation

DO NOT GET TISCALI - USELESS BUNCH OF COWBOYS SEE HERE.

They have gone as far as only allowing registered users view their service forums in the last few days due to so many complaints! Also their technical support are based in India.

Seems like the India thing for computer related help is becoming more popular, one of our finance houses has its helpdesk in India. Although it doesnt cost anymore to ring them as its on an 0870 number.

PS, my exchange goes ADSL live at the end of the month, so thanks for the adslguide link

Great, click on something and its there, watch scooby vids at the click of a button, download things in miutes instead of hours, and most of all, always on with no call charges.
Been with Pipex for nearly a week and no probs so far.

About the callcentres in india got a call today from BT Broadband today from an indian call centre couldn't understand a bloody word. Think I will not use anyone that uses these call centres abroad.
