Reset BIOS - How ?
#1
My BIOS is shagged meaning the laptop won't boot.
I've removed the battery but it's complaining that the system time is out and it won't go any further.
Any way I can repair the damage ?
I've heard of shorting the chip, but I thought the battery removal would've done the same trick.

LOL That'll short every chip on the board
Have you corrupted the bios then ? A simple bios reset is normally done via a jumper (not wooley) on the board itself.
edit: ah crap its a laptop, must read posts more thorughly.
You'll no doubt need to make up a boot disk with new bios and flash program to fix it.

Can't enter the BIOS since it's reset to factory default and password locked itself !
I don't have the gubbin's no more so I can't remember what the buggery it is.
I've tried inserting an XP CD-Rom in the drive in the hope it will boot from there but no joy.
Just keeps moaning that system date is out of sync and CMOS has reset itself to default.
Doesn't have a floppy drive either to compound things
Majorly annoying.

Still no joy
Basically error codes have said:
0217 System Date and Time out of synch
03xx CMOS error code, Default values have been loaded
Then I get a password prompt.
IBM T30 laptop if anyone has suggestions.....

Have now discovered that it's not the BIOS, but a Supervisor Password.
Since I got this 2nd hand, I can only assume that the previous owner disabled it before selling it and with the reset, it's re-applied the lock.
Trouble is, I don't remember who sold me the bleedin' thing !!!
Please tell me I don't have an expensive doorstop

It might be risky but I use to have a program that use to put a bad byte in the CMOS so when it started up it basically reset it to default clearing all passwords and setup info. You were then able to get back into the bios and set it up to your own values.
I'll see if I can find it, or where you can get something similar from. This was last used in about 1998 though, so might not work and you will use at your own risk! It did work for me though last time I used it!

I know that the CPQ laptops need to go back to the factory if the BIOS gets corrupted. The machines have a very basic I/O routine which enables the BIOS to be re flashed via the serial port.
Can't help with IBM's.
