How do I start my own website?
Hi all
I've been giving a bit of thought to starting my own website to show some of my pictures but I've really no idea how to go about it
The main point of the site would be to host my motorsport pics, some of which you can find in members gallery, if you search enough and turbosport is playing! If I just leave it at that I don't really want to have any money tied up in it so I thought about selling some pics to cover some costs, obviously it'll be a while before that takes off!
If sales take off I'd be willing to stump up some cash but untill then is there anything I can do to set me off on my way to being a millionaire

I'd quite like to learn more about how websites work too, the gubbins you don't see, I think that would be cool to learn about
Cheers, Bob, pooter numptie

probably 3 things you need...
1/ a domain name
2/ some webspace / hosting
3/ software to do your web pages
you can get domain name and web hosting (and emails, etc) for £20/year from hostplus and software to do your web pages from microsoft word to micosoft frontpage to dreamweaver.

I had a go at doing my own website at Xmas, i used Frontpage 2002 and my host was :-
www.titanhosts.co.uk
The bloke who runs it Lee is a top bloke, and answers all your emails same day, and helped me out with all sorts of daft newbie problems
My site can be found here:- wcsr
check it out let me know what you think

If it's just pictures you want to to host, then an ideal thing to use would be a gallery app .... I've just dropped one onto my hostplus site (see ^^) and it wasn't rocket science to get it working in an hour or so.

Cheers for that guys
I think the Hostplus fingmy looks like a good option to get me started plus it's not big money
Many thanks again
PS Phil, I like the look of your site, I hope you're enjoying the STI

Ive done 3 myself. All our sites (about 5 I think) are hosted with F5 Hosting. They are a great bunch of lads who even put you on their ICQ list for emergencies and always answer tickets in around an hour (unless they are sleeping). Bought all our domains from Dotster
For my webbys I use:
Dreamweaver MX
Flash FXP - ftp uploader
Flash MX
Photoshop 7
Express Thumbnail Creator

Hi Bob,
I used Arles imaging software for the majority of my site, the galleries etc.
It's pretty good as it resizes pics, creates the HTML etc etc.
As you can see from my first attempt at a website HERE it's pretty basic but does the job of hosting the pics.
I am just using my freeserve free allocation at the moment and haven't got a domain name sorted,
Cheers,
Grahame.

Cheers again!
Grahame, that's just what I want to do, I'm not copying you, honest guv!
D

My dad has just done a website with his Tesco free gubbins stuff, I don't think he has a domain yet either?
Whats the difference with buying a Domain and hosting? The hostplus seemed like you bought a domain and had it hosted for a year at 40 quid but then the one soulgirl has posted seems to be just hosting for 20 quid, a month! Unless I', being a plank, which is very possible!

Hi Bob,
No probs matey, I'm not the first to host some motorsport pics

If you pay for a domain name you get something easy to remember like www.bob.co.uk instead of the long winded ones you get with your ISP's free allocation (like mine).
If you get a domain you need somewhere to host it, most comapnies do both, the domain name and hosting.
Basically the more you pay the more webspace you get as far as I can gather.
My freeserve allocation is a bit weird in that I get 150 meg of webspace which is pretty good for free but that space is brkoen into a limit of 30 megs per site (5 sites allowed).
I am at the point now where I have filled up the first allocation and I am starting to do links to the next website, although this isn't noticable from the original home page.
It's all good fun, loads to learn, when I have a half decent site I may be tempted into buying a domain name,
Cheers,
Grahame.

With Hostplus you have to sign up for two years, hence the £39.98 charge. £20 for 1 year.
Been there, been confused by that.
I have a couple of sites with them and they seem ok. I also have a domain registered with Lee and his service is excellent.
If i was you and it was your first foray into web design/construction i'd register your desired domain name with One And One and also register for their 'Domain Mail Plus' account. It costs less than £20 and allows you to use the domain as a forwarder to your ISP webspace and also set up a couple of e-mail accounts, i.e. bob@bobspeed.com

F5Hosting is in dollars not pounds. The basic package is only around £7 per month which is ample for a small homey site. I only pay $20 or more for my business site because it needs the extra bandwidth.
Cheers dudes
I think I'm up to speed now, almost...it doesn't take much to confuse me
I think I'll suss it right out when I actually get round to buying a package
Thanks
