Question

Hi,

We're currently running Citrix for NT 4.0 Terminal Server. We're upgrading to Citrix XP on a Windows 2000 server. We have 35 users.

I have been told that our current CALS for NT 4.0 are NOT upgradeable for Windows 2000. I have also been told that I will need to purchase 30 Windows 2000 Server CALS (as 5 come with the Windows 2000 server pack already) and also 35 Windows 2000 Terminal Server CALS.

Half of the clients accessing Citrix are Windows 2000 and half are SGI Unix machines. I've been informed that if the machines connecting to the Citrix Server are windows 2000 then we don't need to buy CALS for these machines??

Can anybody confirm what licenses I do need? Nobody i've spoken to seems to know for definite. I'm sooooo confused

Thanks

Marc

1) Windows 2000 Pro/XP Pro do not need a Terminal Services CAL. They are issued one "free" by the Terminal Server from it's built in pool. They will need a Windows 2000 Server CAL. If you are running per-seat licensing for other W2000 servers (ie file & print), then you may well already be covered for this.

Your SGI boxs will need a TS CAL and a W2000 CAL.

2) There is indeed no upgrade path from your NT 4 TS CALs.

If I was doing this, I'd order the whole lot under MS Open Licensing aka MOLP. MOLP is paper licenses and a media kit - no manuals etc.

My shopping list would be:

1 x W2000 Server License
35 x W2000 Server CAL (assuming they don't already exist)
20 x W2000 Term. Serv. CAL (for SGI Machines - adjust qty as required)
1 x W2000 Server Media Kit (CD to install from)

If you buy on MOLP then you have a choice of what you buy:

1) The license with no future upgrade right. If you want to upgrade to Windows 2010 (or whatever) in x number of years, you'd buy from new again at that time.

2) The License with Software Assurance. You have a two year window in which you automatically qualify for upgrades to new versions. After two years, you can extend the Software Assurance to keep recieving upgrades.

HTH,

Chris

PS. You'll now buy Windows 2003 Server CALs. They can be counted on a per user or per device basis but I won't go there
