Logon with correct username and password, it says loading personal settings, waits a bit, then immediately says it's loggin out and returns back to the logon screen
Tried logging both locally and to the domain, the same.
Any clues?
Tried looking in the event viewer and restarting Net logon service, still knackered.
It's a live server and appears to be working ok, so a reboot isn't possible!

Seen this and fixed it before
Userinit.exe is missing from \WinNT\System32
Boot the machine to the logon screen, connect to the C$ root share and drop a copy of the file in over the LAN. Then you should be able to logon.
Next step - perform a full virus scan on the box, followed by a chkdsk. I always found that userinit.exe was missing as an anti virus package had renamed it due to it being infected.
HTH,
Chris.

This sounds similar to what can happen to a W2K workstation, have found that the local and network profile becomes corrupt, have you tried renaming the profile you want to use and let it create a new one ?

ms -is the machine an AD DC or just part of workgroup ?
I have had it with a self contained server running AD/DNS all locally. Basically it was as a result of corrupt directory.... There was a MS q note about it, which meant running the AD Directory fix tools.... however cant find it. :<
Ill have a look. from memory we rebuilt it anyway as it was a test box. :<
