Got Apache running on my local machine (localhost), but trying to figure out how to get it to send out e-mails, preferably as SMTP. Does Apache include SMTP modules, or do I need to install it as a module ? Are there open source modules for this ?

Help! .....

Apache is a webserver, it doesn't send mails What are you trying to do? Usually CGI scripts send mails.

Got Apache running on my local machine, and my web shop software (PHP) sends out confirmation e-mails. Runs fine on my public server machine, but when testing on my local machine, I get errors. Basically, the PHP code is sending the e-mail out, but with nothing to actually 'post' the message, the function call fails.

My assumpion was I needed to setup Apache as a SMTP server, so it could deal with the e-mail. Or am I wrong ?

Nearly...

You can specify a machine running an SMTP server but Apache on its own wont do that

Which os / flavour (if linux) ?

If it's linux , qmail is supposed to be good. Sendmail will be overkill for a testing situation.
