Sattelite Broadband - anyone using it and happy ?
#1
Done some searching on the net a the BT service which sounded ok - till I read some scathing articles on the service. We can't get broadband here and was wondering if anyone other than BT offers an alternative that works. BT service is £899 install and £59/month line rental. I'd be happy enough with the BT stuff @ £59/moth if it worked......

That would be interesting given a geosynchronous satellite is approx 22,000 miles above the earth...
On the demo kit and then the pilot site I've worked on, I've not seen a ping of less 700ms.
The pilot site has had lots of capacity and performance issues during business hours. Web browsing would die on it's knee's from around noon till 4pm.

We're hoping to use it for surfing, accessing internet applications - on-line database and general email up/downloads. We have ISDN but it's painfully slow.
Would Sattelite be any use for this?

Hello
For the things that you are interested in doing, ISDN is probably better. There are some reasonable 128K bonded deals around, about £30pm for around 300 hours.
If you really want satellite, you will find general surfing a poor experience, especially with two-way satellite, as the ping time is slow.
Satellite IS good for large file transfers, as once you get connected the stream will be at your maximum bandwidth.
Where are you from? Is there NO hope of ADSL / Wireless?
Steve.

Kevin,
I use Netsystem which is a one-way service (300kbps down) along with ISDN.
It works ok-ish but not a serious rival for ADSL/Cable. Much cheaper way to "dip your toe in the water" though - 99 euros for the PCI card and 3 months of subs. You need to buy/fit a dish, bracket, LNB(s) and cable yourself though which is pretty easy but adds another £150ish to the price if you DIY.
If you have Sky tv, you can swap the minidish for a larger dish with two LNBs - one for Sky and the other for Netsystem/Astra 19.2 which is what I did. I got most of my bits from Brymar.
There is a Netsystem forum here: http://www.netsystemusers.com.
As you are in Scotland, you may be in luck as it seems to be the place to be for "broadband over power cables" - see http://www.ispreview.co.uk/articles/power/
Thanks
Gavin
