Configuring RAID
#1
I have 2 60gb H/D and Hi Point Raid controller (HPT 372 Chipset)
Q:
How can I configure the RAID. I want to go for performance.
Do I need to install the O/S on one H/D and use some sort of s/w to copy the data onto the second disk.
or
Do I need to install the O/S on both disks, then use s/w to configure the 2 drives.
I am going to install W2K.
Can anyone help?

You need to go into the highpoint bios first. Ideally both drives as master's on the 2 channels. The best performance setting seems to be a 128k stripe with the 372 controller. Select the 2 drives to stripe and give the stripe a name, set the strip block size too at 128k. You will see that the second drive appears as hidden. That is all that is needed.
Obviously all data will be destroyed on both drives and it will appear as 1 big drive to the OS. Press f5 at the begining of the 2k install and insert the driver floppy when asked. Sorted. Try and run the most upto date BIOS on your PC if the the 372 controller is embedded, as the later 372 BIOSes are very good. Download the appropriate driver revision for the 372 BIOS that you are running tho. http://www.highpoint-tech.com

Ive never dealt with IDE raid yet, only scsi. So, assuming they work in the same way, you need to configure your raid drives in the raid bios. You'll see when you boot messages when the raid controller booting.
If you want performance from you raid setup with 2 drives, go for striping, RAID level 0. But if 1 drive goes, you've lost all your data.
