Loved Elite so this demo was installed as soon as it came out

It looks fun but maybe a little samey ? I'm hoping the demo is just a small portion of what's in the full game but it's hard to tell.

Good Freelancer site here

And you can even play Elite online here but I wouldn't bother if you want to keep your memories of it being the best game ever (it's a tad disappointing - lol)

I'm on Mission 6, just made level 10 ... searching for the Professor in the Dublin system . This game is way cool.

A 'mate' aquired the full retail version ahead of release ( Mar 4 ). I may still buy it as I don't know what form the multiplayer will take.

[edit] Warning ! just like elite was, this thing sucks time like you wouldn't believe... It was 3.30 when I dragged myself off to bed this morning , and I'd only gone for "just half an hour on the computer darling " at 10:00

Some of the older gamers amongst you (like me!) will remember Elite on the bbc model b, slightly later ones on the c64 and spectrums then just about every machine ever since. The younger ones won't have a clue what im talking about but do know that every space trading game you've ever seen reviewed gets compared to something called elite.

Well, i think i've found something thats ALMOST as good. Certainly im thoroughly enjoying it and i think of it not as a direct clone (not really possible these days as the wire frames would be a bit poo lol) but more an updated version and certainly one of the better attempts (privateer the darkening wasn't bad from memory but this feels better).

The graphics are nicely updated, the docking is easier (personally had a mare with this when i was a kid!) flying with a mouse is surprisingly VERY easy and intuitive, some of the controls and procedures a little long winded but the basics are all there. police forces, multiple galaxies, commodities, ship upgrades and weapon upgrades even jobs for the police, corporations and other less desirables.

I've only been playing it today but im seriously hooked already and would heartily recommend it to anyone who enjoyed Elite. Its not the new Elite, it won't stop comparisons but it is pretty damn good.

Steve - is there much variation in the full game ?

The ships that you fight in the demo (and the one you pilot) all seem pretty similar.

Bigsinky - you need to install directx9 before the game.

Andy, there's a fair amount of variation - each of the systems and sets of pirates have different classes of ships and you come up against the rheinlander navy & stuff. I'm on my 4th ship right now & have swapped weapons around ad infintum until I was happy . It's no more samey than elite was ... but the missions you get from each bar tend to be "go to x , kill everything/kill this person/get this cargo" the storyline extends this a bit as the plot with the alien artifact develops. You seem to do some of the storyline, stop & do some individual missions & trading, then when you move up a level continue with another stage of the story.

Anyone tried 'X - beyond the frontier' ?
Now that's a cool elite clone.
And apparently X-online will be out this year.
