How do I loose my dualboot
#1
Hi all,
I've been running 98 and XP for a while now and I've used all of the apps on XP and don't bother with 98 anymore. How do I get rid of 98 and free up some space.
98 on C, XP on D (different drive). Also, would I be better off rearranging my drives so XP runns from C?
TIA,
Gareth

Remapping the drives will be a real pain, also dont format drive C: or you wont be able to boot XP.
Simple solution would be to find boot.ini file on c:\ and edit out the option for win98, you should see a line that looks like
C:\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows"
Then from XP delete folders related to windows98 from the eg. Windows folder and "program files" folder. checking as you go that you dont delete anything you need.

The other way would be this:
boot into windows xp
Start --> My Computer --> View System Information
This will bring up your system information.
"Advanced" TAB
Startup and Recovery box --> "Settings"
In the box at the top, choose WindowsXP in the pulldown menu
If you don't want to use Win98 any more, then change "Time to display list of operating systems" to 0 (zero) seconds.
You then have the option to go back if you wish.

Thanks Guys.
Is it only the C:\Windows directory I can delete (but not the boot.ini if it's in there - can't remember) or are there any others (C:\Program Files etc)

Gareth,
Be very careful when you start deleting the Windows folders on the Windows 98 partition. I had the same setup as you and after a few months deleted the Windows 98 partition. Making my fail to boot. After about 3 hours of playing I got it to boot from the Windows XP partition and then it blue screen with a stop error (don't for the live of me know why).
I tried all different kinds of things, XP recovery console, reinstalling Windows 98 on the Windows 98 partition. All failed.
To make matters worse, the MBR (Master Boot Record) was ****ed and I had to rebuild it using c:>fix mbr (I think).
All I can say is be very careful and make sure that you do a FULL back up before you start changing things.
Hope this helps
