Hi Folks

Has anyone got any recommendations for a 17"+ TFT which is good for gaming, mainly FPS and RTS?

I've heard the NEC 1760NX is good and also the Samsung 181T/191T. It'll be driven by a Radeon 9700Pro so want DVI.

Thanks

Steve

Not quite perfect, but the best TFT so far for gaming is the Hitachi CML174SXW, available in charcoal too:

That should tide you over

From what I just read it looks like the NEC 1760NX has the 16ms refresh of the Hitachi. So as I can get that and not the Hitachi I think I'll order one of them.

Question

Have you got any decent reviews of the NEC? I haven't seen any around, but haven't been looking, so curious. Lag time isn't everything you know

If you have a look at the huge (80+ pages) thread on arstechnica there some details. Toms hardware france have a review as well.

Seems like its actual nearly the same panel made by the same people as make the Hitachi

If the refresh is 16ms then this equates to 62.5 Hz refresh rate..

Can you let us all know whether you see tearing with high frame rate games?

I've got it on order from www.monitors-online.co.uk. Order the 1760NX in black a DVI cable and next day delivery for about 460 all in.

Should be here tomorrow.

I've just read the toms hardware link, the 1760NX has a DVI connection which I would expect to help with the few problems they describe. I'll let you know tomorrow.

I've been using a TFT to play counter strike on and find it a lot less tiring on the eyes.

Defo recommend the Samsung monitors, their after care service is second to none. When mine got damaged (mrs scratched the screen), they came the next day with a replacement and picked mine up.

The Compaq V75 I have at the moment seems to be give me a splitting headache after a few hours use which is the main reason for me wanting a TFT as I use 2x Dell 1702FP at work which cause no problems.

You paid that much extra just so you wouldn't have to wait? The only difference really is the adjustable height compared to the Hitachi. What else about it made you want to pay over the odds IMO? I Rather you than me

The £460 was inc VAT the cable and delivery. Seemed like a good price to me at least for the NEC. The NEC looks much better in my opinion as well. A bit more expensive than the Hitachi and available now rather than 3 weeks which is what I'm being told for the Hitachi.

But if it works and is as good a screen as I'm told I'll be quite happy.

Steve

If I'd just spent a small fortune on another monitor I'd have a problem spending more money. I havent bought a monitor for about 5+ years so I need a good upgrade. My desk would collapse under the weight of a 17" + monitor so a TFT is a good option as long as it does what I want.

Well it turned up, but it's faulty, the bottom half of the screnn is about 50% brighter than the top, which isnt doing my eye sight much good. But phoned NEC and will have a replacement here Tuesday, would have had it earlier but they are out of stock in the UK of the black ones.

I have tried it in UT2003, Battlefield 1942 and C&C General and all I can say about the quailty of the picture is that its brilliant, no ghosting at all, and runs really nicely at 1280x1024 max'd out. Even at 1024 x 768 every thing looks good.

Compared to the Samsung 191T I've tried the picture on the NEC 1760NX is 1000x better. The 191T had lots of ghosting even in C&C on the intro where the Commaches fly past they had a trail almost as long as the screen.

All in all well impressed and money well spent in my view.

Steve

Oh in it looks tons better than the Hitachi

Oh god......Please don't temp me.......

Did you get the cable from there too? I didn't see any on their site.

Could you do me a hooj favour and measure the width of the screen area and the height area and post them up here please? I just don't quite trust the dimensions all the time that sites state.

Cheers,

Nick

Yeah phoned them and ordered the cable as well as the monitor. They've been very helpful, offering to advance RMA the monitor for me but I can wait until Tuesday for the replacement direct from NEC.

The panel is Exactly 17" diagonal, 27cm high 34 across. The bezel is 31.5cm high, 37.5cm wide.

Do you need any more info??

Oh poo, I could have sworn going on summat I read recently that they measured TFT's across the width of the screen instead of diagonal like CRT's

The Panel is definatly bigger than the Screen on my 17" monitor. I dont know if its as big as a 18" or 19" CRT but I like it.

17" TFT is equiv to a 18/19 crt as crt's the tube is measured so you still get some of it hidden behind plastic surround, with tft's what you see is what you get
