Ok you want an update.....

Well I've had 2 NEC monitors in the last week, both which exhibit the same fault, the bottom half of the screen being brighter than the top regardless of the viewing angle. If you take scoobynet for example on the main bbs page, with the orange strip, this appears bright orange at the top, but a washed out orange at the bottom. It also doesnt matter how you look at the screen you can see a difference.

NEC say they cant find fault with my original monitor, but I've had a Dell 1702FP and a Samsung 191T on my desk in the last few days and these dont show the same problem so must be the screen.

If you ignore this problem and just look at the monitor from a game point of view its superb. The colours, sharpness etc are just brilliant, and with the ATI drivers able to turn off screen scaling its works well in all the games I tried.

I think I'll end up with either the Dell 1702, but might order the 2000FP or the Hitachi with the same panel as I've arranged to send the NEC back to the supplier.

If you wanna know anything else let me know......

Actually, I would appreciate any info on the Dell 1702FP, as I saw that tonight and liked the look of it.

Cheers,

Nick

The 1702FP seemed to be very good for web browsing etc with sharp text and better resizing than the NEC. My only complaint would be its still very bright when the brightness is turned right down.

For games its not as good as the NEC but isnt that far off. There is a littl ghosting in Batllefield 1942, but you have to really look for it and also it no where near as bad as the Samsung 191T. In C&C generals scrolling round the screen quickly gives more of a slighlty blurred effect but its not bad at all. The actual units moving around have no ghosting at all.

I'm still torn between getting the Hitachi, Iiyama or Dell, but with dell saying that because their websites says they have reducing ghosting they will accept it back if its no good I might go the whole hog and buy the 20" one

Steve

I just re-read the Anandtech review of the Hitachi and they had exactly the same problem as I did with the NEC with a large bright patch at the bottom of the screen. Maybe I wont go for the Hitachi..........

Bizzare as I tried UT2003, only quickly I must admit, and it seemed ok. What res etc were you running it at? and did you have V-sync turned on or off?

I've gone and broke the bank by ordering the 20" Dell But they have said that if it has ghosting etc they'll accept it back as they say it should have next to non on their website.

1702FP at 1280*1024 , not sure if v-sync was on as it wasn't my box, had to kick a programmer out to lunch to get on it.... colours looked good and at normal speed setting it is definately playable, upped speed to 150% and didn't enjoy it at all. Much better on my Dell Trinitron...

Ok I only run at 100%, so maybe why it work ok for me. Also run on DVI from a 9700Pro with V-Sync off (which strangely reduces tearing) so I suppose that helps some.

If you ask nicely at Dell they may give you a discount. I spoke to a girl called Lauren Morris who dropped about 60-70 off the 20" price.
