Yes, this is actually for work. Basically need to ship a lot of data about. Might have to do some "other" testing first though
Thanks for the supplier advice.

i got one of the first 30 of these units into the uk @£199 plus p+p. i have to say that i have had absolutely no probs with the burner either with dvds or cds. not quite as fast as my lite-on cd burner only x24 as opposed to x48. i have checked the dvd burning at x1 and x2 and have had no probs so far. i have yet to get some x4 media to test that particular speed tho i don't forsee any probs. i had to upgrade to the latest version of nero (5.5.10 i think) to get dvds that had absolutely no glitches on playback. i am using cheapo yellow datawrite atm (80p per disc using princo dye) and using the latest version of stomp's recordnow max pro 4.5 i have had no coasters and the "backup" movies are glitch free. hopefully if sony produce another firmware upgrade then the cd burning speed will increase.
as to getting one, all i can say is good luck they are like rocking horse poo to get atm. i have seen new boxed units selling on ebay for £349!!. having said i have heard a rumour that sony have a new model out already and that the new NEC dual format burner is due at the end of the month. all in all i would say a very versatile piece of kit in that you are not limited to one or other format as it will do both quite happily.
cheers

P1,
Have a google for a bit of software called "DVDXCopy". I hear it makes perfect backups of DVDs, both NTSC and PAL, oh and is legal by all accounts as it doesn't actually crack Macrovision. Seems to take about an hour to do a backup copy.
I'm not really interested in this myself, I'm more interested in having a burner mainly for creating large backups of data I'm working on and being able to change small parts of that data as I go and also occasionally making a video disc from camcorder footage.
I might wait on the burner for a while if NEC have one coming. Can't find a retail Sony anyway at the moment, only OEM.
Cheers
