I'd recommend for going for a well known brand make, ie, Compaq, IBM, Dell, Toshiba, Sony, etc - they may be slightly more expensive but in three years time, when its well out of warranty spares and support will be available. From one of the smaller box builders, they brand their own logo on "no-name" Taiwanese built machines for which spares and support will be difficult.
(On my three and half year old Sony!)

Avoid the Toshiba 6xxx range like the plague. We ahve so many issues with them and Toshiba themselves deny anything is wrong with them. When you have about 50% returns rate on them you know there is a major problem.

Try the dell site use this to access the Factory Outlet
http://www.euro.dell.com/countries/uk/enu/dfo/products/line_notebooks.htm
Just had a look at Latitude 2600's with DVD starting at £ 703.00 + VAT & Del so around £ 880.00 all in.
I bought mine this time last year, had to keep an eye on this as the stock changes constantly.

Also check out www.europc.co.uk for good deals on factory refurb laptops - a colleague of mine bought one just before Christmas, saved a packet, and the PC looked like new
