Does any body know how to disable these annoying pop up adverts, I have tried a number of different banner zappers, which only work for a while then like the borg the banners seem to adapt and start again, I have Norton personal firewall installed and done a complete block from certain urls that I have found in some of the popups but they still get through somehow!! they are really anoying especially when your typing without looking only to find that after the first word a banner poped up and you have not actually typed anything due to the window not being active anymore.

If you can handle using two browsers try Opera, it succesfully stops pop-ups for me, is a config option. For those sites that refuse to work on anything else but IE you can always just fire it up I suppose, that's what I do. Pop-ups are a pain in the **** and I feel your pain

I use PanicWare's PopUp Stopper which works a treat I've had none since I installed it
Only thing is, it sometimes blocks ones you would like but then you just hold down Ctrl and click the link, and they come up anyway
Big thumbs up! Available here: www.panicware.com or direct to download page (get the free one) here: http://www.panicware.com/popupstoppercompare.html
Cheers

Hello
They are annoying, sometimes "legimate" sites like virgin offer competitions via these pop-up adverts.
I tend to leave them on, unless I'm visiting the more, erm, "interesting" sites on the internet.

I have a feeling that some pop-ups are sent using the messaging service built into XP (and maybe NT/W2K), so disabling the messaging service should put a stop to those.
'Fraid I don't know exactly how to do that, mind - I'm still (fairly) happily using Win 98 which doesn't have this problem.

Camk I do have Ad-Aware 5.83 installed but not sure what to do with the results it gives me. Is it safe to delete all the items it comes up with or what?
Cheers

Try Netcaptor.
It has built in popup-stopper, and is much better than IE. you can open loads of links in new windows and they all stay within an outer window and are tabbed...unlike IE which throws them all over your screen..
Can't recommend NetCaptor enough....and it's only about £15 with free updates for life!

The popup messages sent via RPC are easily distinguishable from the ones you get whilst web browsing, but if you run zone alarm or some other firewall you shouldn't see those anyway. Unfortunately Windows ships in zero security mode so you need to disable all those services yourself.

Steve,
I delete them all. I don't get them now unless I download something dodgy(cough, cough)(due to my Router having a built in Firewall). After any major internet downloaded software install I run adaware to check there is no spyware included in the install package.
I've even uninstalled my Zonealarm software since the physical one went online as it was reporting nothing except being pinged by the Router.
Cheers

No problem Paul .
By the way, if you're running Windows XP, you can enable the built-in Firewall software. Go to the dial-up properties for your Internet connection, and on one of the tabs, it has a tick-box for enabling the Firewall.
I run ZoneAlarm too just to be sure!
