Linux on an X-Box
#3
yeah, I've been running linux on an xbox for quite a while now.
(never even tried a game on it...lol)
I wrote my own linux distro for it and it runs really well.
Just seeing if anyone else is running it, I find it pretty interesting.

Blimey, I'm impressed I'm sure the sourceforge guys would love to hear from you. Or even xbox-scene.com. They are always on the lookout for good programmers.
You really should try the games you know, they are rather good

As I say, I built my own version of linux to run it on. I decided my Xbox was gonna sit on my network perimiter as a firewall, intrusion detection system, router and logger, with some other trick bit on there (not telling what )
I basically grabbed the latest stable kernel (2.4.20) from kernel.org, did a bit of research on the Xbox hardware and configured the kernel for them. I'm not running any fancy packages or even Xwindows.....its just the shell. I built from source and installed the following programs:
Autoconf (2.57)
Automake (1.7.2)
Bash (2.05a)
Bin86 (0.16.3)
Binutils (2.13.2)
Bison (1.75)
Bzip2 (1.0.2)
Diffutils (2.8.1)
E2fsprogs (1.32)
Ed (0.2)
File (3.39)
Fileutils (4.1)
Findutils (4.1)
Flex (2.5.4a)
Gawk (3.1.1)
GCC-core (3.2.1)
GCC-g++ (3.2.1)
Gettext (0.11.5)
Glibc (2.3.1)
Grep (2.5)
Groff (1.18.1)
Gzip (1.2.4a)
Kbd (1.08)
Less (378)
Bootscript (1.10)
Libtool (1.4.3)
Lilo (22.2)
Linux (2.4.20)
M4 (1.4)
Make (3.80)
MAKEDEV (1.7)
Man (1.5k)
Man-pages (1.53)
Modutils (2.4.22)
Ncurses (5.3)
Netkit-base (0.17)
Net-tools (1.60)
Patch (2.5.4)
Perl (5.8.0)
Procinfo (18)
Procps (3.1.5)
Psmisc (21.2)
Sed (4.0.5)
Shadow (4.0.3)
Sh-utils (2.0)
Sh-utils Hostname
Sysklogd (1.4.1)
Sysvinit (2.84)
Tar (1.13)
Texinfo (4.3)
Textutils (2.1)
Util-linux (2.11y)
Vim (6.1)
Zlib (1.1.4)
If you are comfortable with kernel configuring, compiling and a bit of C coding, you should have no problems. After all, the Xbox is an IBM hardware based machine. You just need running version of linux to build it all on.
If the above is not what you are after and you want the full works, with X and all the major progs but are not up to the job of grabbing a regular copy of linux from a major distributer, then configuring it to run....(should be straight forward with a bit of linux instalation knowledge) you can grab a copy of mandrake 9 from their website, with an instalation program especially built for the Xbox. Just set it running and go get a brew
Hope this helps more people get out of the big dirty hole that is Micro$oft....uugghh *washes mouth out*, and have a play about with some real operating systems
