Change ATI 9500 to 9700 by software?
#1
Any one else seen this? Is it really possible? It certainly seems so according to the links. So if you want a new card you might be interested.

A word of warning to the wise...It only works on OLDER 9500 boards that were build on 9700 PCB, which has 256 bit architecture... it will NOT work on newer 9500 boards, because they are on their own PCB now. In other words, do not buy a 9500 with the intention of hacking it inot a 9700 it will NOT work. It will only work with existing first gen 9500 boards!

Why? Have you got a board to try with?
Having read (a little) around the subject, it appears that real 9500 boards only support 64Mb using the 128-bit memory interface.
Any 128Mb board therefore isn't based on the 9500 ref design - an mfrs like Sapphire appear to have used 9700 boards with 9500 chips to make it work. All the posts on hardforum appear to have been made in the last couple of days.
If I can find a board at the right price, I think I'll give it a go.

ChrisB : O'clockers reckon they'll have them on sale this week. I spoke to the chap at gemma ( who are listed as shuttle distributors for the UK ) and he said end of the month.

It's arrived!
And it's a 9700 Board, so it's got the 256-bit bus (ram 2 lots of 2, unlike inline 4 of the 9500 Pro boards, but 3.6ns rated )!
I'll let you know how I get on!

Cr@p - it gets the chequerboard problem - looks like it's reasonably common (and from the type of corruption I'll keep my fingers crossed that there'll be a fix).
Overclocks OK tho'

there is talk on the overclockers forums of a software hack that doesn't introduce the chequerboard issue.
( on the last page or two of the thread )

Have you tried every version of the hacks? Some report success with Wizzards hack and some rivatuner, or try disable compressed textures. I've got the card but not the time to install and test for a bit.

Fill rates definately doubled - only managed to get RivaTuner working at the minute.
Checkerboard happens on Windows Buttons too though, so I'm not entirely convinced it's a hardware pipeline issue (why would XP use hardware texture pipelines for "OK" buttons etc in Windows!)
It will be fixed - oh yes
