I was given a laptop with Windows ME, which kept crashing and no restore CD. I flattened the machine and installed Windows 2000. I have been on the Sony site and downloaded all the 2000 drivers and most have gone on okay.
If I view the hardware list there is two devices that don’t have drivers installed one being a PCI device and the other unknown. I have tried installing the modem driver onto the PCI device (Built in modem) but it won’t detect the modem. The modem was working okay until the machine started to crash.
There’s no IRQ conflict with the machine and I have run out of ideas.
Any input
The machine is a Sony Vaio PCG-FX101

Hi Jer, the system probably says unknown because it is prob the incorrect driver.
Usually if the correct pci device is loaded it will install the rest of the driver software.
I dont know if this will work, (i dont have a vaio to try it on.
Try the modem driver listed here.

remove the unknown. It looks like this site supplies the driver in a zipped format, so i do not know if u run setup or what.
Cheers

I take it all the Graphic's/Sound drivers have installed ok...!!!
What i would personnelly do is remove all the unknown devices from Device manager, reboot the machine, 2000 should then try and find the removed hardware and will give you the option to install the drivers for them at startup, if you have the drivers on the H/D floppy etc just Browse and select the drivers...
This is the way i alway's do it at work, i work in schools and we are alway's having to kill off machines and re-install the drivers...
Did you download the chipset drivers or seperate drivers for each device...
HTH,
John.

I had the same thing with Win 2k and a VAIO.
No drivers on the Sony VAIO-link site for the internal modem. I even tried downloading some generic ones from Conexant but it still didn't work.
Found a win 2k driver for a 'billionton' CF card modem -- didn't work.
Ended up connecting an old USR Courier to the serial port...
