I have 3 uesers on my PC, all can get to my folders from their own user accounts.

I have tried to prevent access to My Documents to others, windows XP help is now telling me that I have to have a NTFS formatted disk for the folder security to work?? Is that right?? I have a FAT32 fisk.

You can convert your FAT32 disk to NTFS without having to format

The command from the command prompt is:-

Convert C: /FS:NTFS

Be warned though, this can take some time!

Edited as I am suffering from Homer Fingers(tm) Today

Thanks for the compliment Ian!!!

Is there the possibility of any file system damage, anything I will need to re-set up?? Or is it a case of just running the command??

Doh I must read my post before hitting submit!

I have done this on quite a few PC's however like most things, I would make sure that I have the important data backed up first just to be on teh safe side.

Thumbs up

Matt,

Plaese let us know how you get on and how you set up the security thing. My "Make this folder private" tick box is greyed out for some reason.

I've only had XP since buying a new laptop last week so I'm still trying to find my way around.

Cheers

I would also turn off simple file sharing

cos if this is enable you wont be able to control properly who can access what, as the security tab is missing !!!

Ok, I tried last night.........

But just after I entered the drive label, I got a message telling me that I need to unmount the drive! I said NO!!

Just lacking confidence maybe, so if I say YES and the convert process runs, will I be asked if I want to re-mount the drive?? Or will it all happen automatically??

Cool

Matt,

I've gone and done it.

Told me the drive needed to be dismounted or something, clicked yes and got a message saying the conversion would take place the next time the computer is booted.

Took around 15 minutes but left the drive all fragmented, a couple of defrag's later and alls well.

Security all setup and working fine.
Wife tries to get to my files and it comes up "Access Denied"

Cheers

Ok, I've gone and done it. My disks are now NTFS, but when I boot up, I get the following message:

914 qttask.exe – No Disk
There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddisk2\DR2.
Canel, Try Again, Continue

Any ideas how to fix it???
