Question

It's possible that it's a character set or locale setting problem.

I forget exactly where it is (and I run 2k so it will be different for XP anyway) - but if you look in control panel for your 'Regional Settings' option, you'll find a tab where the locale can be changed and also the characters that are used for currency, date formatting etc.

Might be worth a check to make sure that your £ symbol hasn't been inadvertently set to a ?.

Some more info might help.

You say "it keeps on displaying ???? instead of numbers"
Constantly in every application?
Only on certain websites?
Only in certain applications?
At random intervals?
None of the above?

Depending on where it happens it could be a missing or corrupted font.

On the other hand it may just be trying to stop you spending money

It isn't the encoding setting in IE ? View > Encoding should be at Western European ( Windows ).
